Dr. Ash Bender

MD, FRCPC, Psychiatric Consultant

Dr. Bender is an Occupational Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. At CAMH, he is a staff psychiatrist and former Medical Head of the Work, Stress and Health Program, which is a multidisciplinary program specializing in the assessment, treatment, and research of psychological injury. He has several publications in the area of workplace mental health and continues to provide expertise and training to improve the management of mental health and addiction at work.

Dr. Bender is a psychiatric consultant to RBC Insurance and has performed numerous independent evaluations for worker’s compensation, private insurers, employers, regulatory bodies, and the courts. Clinically, Dr. Bender works with forensic populations part-time at the Toronto South Detention Centre.


Leigh Allen

Associate Vice President

Leigh Allen, AVP at Reinsurance Group of America, Inc. (RGA) is responsible for global strategy, including industry and market surveys and research. Her articles and white papers have been featured in many trade publications and she is regarded as a subject matter expert on several key life and health insurance topics. Prior to joining RGA in 2011, Ms. Allen worked at the United Nations (UNHCR) in the United Kingdom and in risk management consulting as a Senior Associate for Control Risks Group and Kroll Associates in the United States. Ms. Allen is currently serving on the Board of Governors for Huron at Western University in London, Canada. Ms. Allen also served as a Board member of the London Goodenough Association of Canada from 2008 to 2019. In her roles she supported capital projects and scholarships for Canadians pursuing postgraduate studies while staying at London Goodenough College in London, UK. Ms. Allen earned a Master of Science degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science (UK) and an Honours Bachelor of Arts from Huron at Western University.

Erin Crump

Vice President, Business Initiatives

Erin Crump is Vice President, Business Initiatives, and a member of RGA Canada’s Business Development Team. She is a group and health insurance professional with nearly 20 years of experience, and her background includes experience in pricing, underwriting, product development, human resources, marketing, and distribution. Prior to joining RGA in 2021, Erin served as vice president, individual and mental health for GreenShield, where she also held roles in strategic innovation and corporate pricing and analytics. She also previously held roles with Munich Re and Willis Towers Watson. Erin received a Bachelor of Mathematics degree in actuarial science, with a minor in statistics, from the University of Waterloo. She is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

Frences Lan

Senior Underwriting Consultant

Frences was born on a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean named Mauritius. She is fluent in English, French and Creole. She has over 20 years of experience underwriting Life, Disability and Critical Illness insurance. She started her career at Sun Life and gradually moved to the reinsurance world. Frences has been with SCOR since 2019 where she continues to underwrite cases from all 3 lines of business as a Senior Underwriting Consultant. In addition to underwriting new business cases, Frences is also involved in the review of contestable policies after issue or at time of claim.

She is the mother of 2 boys and in her spare times, loves travelling and discovering new restaurants.

Thierry Niyokindi

FLMI, AALU, Director of Underwriting

Thierry was born in Burundi, a small country in Central East Africa. He studied Management and Economics at the Université Catholique de Louvain, located in Mons, Belgium. He moved to Canada in 1995.

Thierry’s main language is French but he also speaks English, Swahili and Kirundi.

Thierry is currently the Director of Underwriting at SCOR Life Canada. He has over 25 years of experience in Life and Critical Illness insurance, with 10 years in Reinsurance. During his spare time, he enjoys exploring Toronto for some delicious food and wine, and enjoys shopping. Thierry is a keen traveler and loves experiencing new cultures.

Kerin Moreton

ALHC, FLMI, ACS, AIAA

Kerin Moreton is Vice President, North American Claims at Munich Reinsurance. She is responsible for Claims and Canadian Legal counsel for Life, Group and Living Benefits products, for clients in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. She leads Munich Re’s technical claim experts in adjudication, industry Best Practice, claim training, claim audits, risk monitoring compliance, reporting and process enhancement. Directing diverse and multi-lingual teams in Toronto, Montreal and Atlanta, Kerin has also conceptualized and created claim systems internally and customized tools for clients, promoting innovation and thought leadership in claim management and processes. Kerin has more than 30 years of insurance and reinsurance industry experience. She is a past presenter at the ECC, International Claim Association (ICA), was an Executive Member of the Canadian LOMA Claims Education Section, past Chairperson of the CLHIA Claims & Fraud Education Conference and past presenter at Claims, Underwriting and Reinsurance conferences.
